It connects what Jesus said in John 4:14 “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” To Old Testament themes water/desert Psalm 42:1–2, Psalm 63:1, Isaiah 44:3, all connect thirst/water with longing for God.
